This behavior is same for both versions of Adobe Update Manager (AUM 5 and AUM 6), which are used by Creative Suite CS3, Creative Suite CS4, Adobe Acrobat/Adobe Reader 8 and Adobe Acrobat/Reader 9 products. If permissions are not correctly set, AUM will not be able to create Updater6 and will fail to check and show any updates. If Updater6 is not already present, AUM attempts to create this folder under “/Library/Application Support/Adobe”.
On launch, AUM first checks for the presence of Updater6 folder under “/Library/Application Support/Adobe”.

Adobe Update Manager (AUM) requires this value to be 775. This incorrect permission has been observed on Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard, but AUM on any prior Mac OS versions can also run into this issue if for some reason admin group doesn’t have write permission on “/Library/Application Support/Adobe”. Apple Disk Utility's 'Repair Disk Permissions' function does not correct this problem, which is why the above command line correction is required under these circumstances. Incorrect permissions are set for /Library/Application Support/Adobe during installation on some machines.
